We, over here at Walden Floral LA and Nashville, are obsessed with flowers. We get inspired by their beauty and want to create with them whenever we can. We love them! Naturally, we became curious about the most unique and rare flowers in the world. So we started doing some research and found our favorite unique and rare flowers to share with you. Enjoy!

The Chocolate Cosmo

This flower is actually one of our favorite flowers of all time! We had no idea just how rare they are. They are still being grown for commercial use and from time to time they will be available for sale in the LA Flower Market. We love to design with them.

The chocolate cosmo was originally found in Mexico and is unfortunately extinct in its natural habitat. Thankfully they are still being cultivated. You can even buy your own and grow them in your garden. It is not expensive to have this wonderful flower in your yard.

The coolest thing about chocolate cosmos has to be that they actually smell like chocolate.

The Jade Vine

This is one of the most amazing colors we have ever seen in a flower. This vine only grows in the rainforests of the Philippines and can reach up to 42 feet. It produces breathtaking clusters of flowers that can grow up to 3 feet in length.

The flowers themselves are waxy in texture and when pollinated can produce fruit the size of a melon. If you are waiting for those pretty flowers to appear you are going to need some patience. It has been reported that it can take up to two years to flower.

Strangely it is closely connected to the kidney bean family, but that is of little concern to us. We are only concerned with how amazing it looks!

Many people in the US are growing this in their gardens, but they are in warmer and humid climates like Miami.

The Ghost Orchid

This incredible flower is a native of Florida and Cuba. It is a very delicate orchid that grows on trees. It wraps its root around the tree and suspends itself perpendicular to the ground, extending itself out to pollinators who would fly by. The roots often blend in closely in color to the tree that it attaches itself to, which makes the flower of the orchid seem like it's floating, attached to nothing. This is where it gets its name the Ghost Orchid.

It thrives in a humid swampy environment and most attempts to cultivate it outside of its natural habitat have failed.

One of the most interesting things about this flower is that it is also very fragrant and it kind of smells like an apple.

The largest Ghost Orchid is located in Florida’s Corkscrew Swamp. It has been named the Super Ghost Orchid and is located on the truck of a tree 70 feet in the air. It was discovered in 2007 and has bloomed every year since its discovery.

Japanese Butterfly Ranunculus

These are not very rare, but we will put them in the unique category. We rarely get them on our side of the world. We love working with them and feel like they add a unique texture wherever we can place them. They come in all different kinds of colors. Our favorite is the charlotte.

The flower petals have a tiny layer of wax on them so they have a slight bit of a glossy shimmer.

One interesting fact is that all ranunculus are poisonous when eaten so it might not be a good idea to put them on cakes!

Bearded Iris

The bearded iris is not rare, but it certainly is unique. There is just nothing that looks like it. It certainly stands on its own. The iris comes in many different colors. They range from white, yellow, orange, pink, purple, lavender, blue, or brown. We think the coolest ones are the dark burgundy and an almost black purple. They are so dramatic and can make a statement. People have been cultivating the iris for thousands of years. It obviously has been a crowd favorite for a long time. It certainly is a favorite of ours.
